How the difference is computed

Whole years are fine for conversation, but several real-world rules key off the precise gap. School enrollment cutoffs create the famous "relative age effect": children born just after the cutoff can be nearly a full year older than their youngest classmates, and studies across hockey, soccer and academics have found the older-in-cohort kids disproportionately represented in top teams and gifted programs. Parents comparing two children's ages for kindergarten entry often need the exact months, not the rounded years.
Relationships are the other common reason people look this up. A gap quoted as "3 years" can be anywhere from just over 2 to nearly 4 calendar years depending on birthdays; several countries' legal and visa frameworks (partner visas, age-of-consent close-in-age exemptions, insurance joint policies) distinguish by the exact difference at a given date rather than the rounded number. The day-level breakdown settles those cases without ambiguity.
Comparing gaps across generations and pets
The calculator works for any two dates, which makes it handy for generational trivia: the gap between a parent born in 1970 and a child born in 2000, between two siblings, or between a founder and the company they started (companies have "birth dates" too — registration dates). Dog owners run the same math with a twist: the calendar gap is exact, but converting to "dog years" is folklore rather than science — the old multiply-by-7 rule breaks down because large breeds age faster in absolute terms and the first two years count for far more than 14 dog-years.
One caveat for very long gaps: when the two dates span more than a century, the skipped leap days in century years (1900, 2100) start to matter. This calculator uses real calendar arithmetic, so historical gaps — say, between someone born in 1899 and 1999 — come out correct where naive 365.25-day math drifts by a day or two.
